January means summer in New Zealand!
The weather is fantastic! And that doesn't mean just hot and sunny!
This is a sunset, and the reality was even more beautiful.
This is one view of Rangitoto. It is the youngest volcano in New Zealand, having erupted just 600 years ago.
What ever this flower is, it is everywhere. It is a non-native (and invasive)and everyone "loves" them. They are OK but get ugly really quickly after flowering. but they do make a great foreground for this picture.
The хозяин (master of the land) mowing. It was the first and only time it has happened since we've lived here! Fortunately, the summer was really dry and there was no need to mow, but now it is winter and raining...!
We spent a week in Tauranga. Volodya was supposed to work, but the red tape worked to slowly. So we had a week to play! The house we stayed in was right on the beach, so after a 1 minute walk through the dunes, we were on the beach!
One day we went to Whakatane (remember that "wh" is pronounced "f" - so *uk-a-ta-nay) to go out to White Island. It is a very active volcanic island, hence the interesting gear.
Yes, I have an umbrella. Discovering that you are allergic to sunblock before moving to a place where there is extreme danger from the sun (ozone layer issues!) makes life interesting!!!
In the middle of the week Lydia had a mandatory school meeting (of course!) So she and I drove back and bought her uniform. I made her try it on immediately! She was not a happy camper. Fortunately, we turned around almost immediately and drove back to Tauranga, to...
...learn to surf!
The following weekend, we went to the Coromandel. One of the things we did was hike to Cathedral Cove. We met a family from Massachusetts who are now living in Christchurch.
Love this sign! "Extreme Danger Warning. Access Prohibited" and yet the path to get to the big rock goes right under this arch, that is falling down!!!
